What are keywords?

 

Keywords are what users type into search engines to look for relevant websites.

Keywords are what you type into your website content to attract search engines and their users.

 

How important are keywords to your online business?

As search engines users type words or phrases about what they are looking for, search engines seek relevant matching content on the internet. And almost immediately search engines offer a prioritized list of the related websites corresponding to the entered queries. To search engines, the right keywords differentiate between what is relevant and what is irrelevant.

As you aspire to promote your online business optimizing your website keywords allows you a first row seat of the search engines' results pages. Keywords separate the visible from the invisible.

 

Sounds simple?

As simple as it sounds, it is not! There is more to it than what meets the eyes since for you to be able to attract and draw the search engine users to your website content you have to speak your Keywords in multiple tongues to be able to:

For you to be able to choose the right keywords you need to think like a search engine user: a consumer or someone looking for your products or services. As a rule of the thumb, you need to find answers to the following questions:

  • Who is your target audience?
    • What keywords and phrases are likely to be used by my audience?  
  • What are the keywords related to your products and service on the internet?
  • What keywords your competitors are using?  

Now, you need to make a list of those keywords, what is important and what is less important.

  • Build your content around the important keywords that are likely to be used by customers. Your keywords should be used where they make sense not scattered around your web pages.
  • Use different variations of the keywords Ex. leather bags: women’s leather bags, men’s leather handbags, leather bags for men, leather bags for women, high quality leather handbags, beautiful leather handbags, fashionable leather handbags. soft leather bags, hard leather bags.

 

Think like search engines  

To communicate with search engines, you must think like search engines. Search engines’ send their spiders to check websites content and their relevance to the search query their users typed. Therefore, you need to optimize your website keywords by considering the following:  

  • Keywords density
    • Important keywords should be 3% – 7% of your content, less important keywords should be used less.
    • Each page should have 1 – 3 important keywords assigned to its content.  
  • Keywords location
    • Website URL: should contain your most important keywords.
    • Page titles: assigning keywords to the title tags enables search engines to find you quicker.
    • First paragraph: it is important to have most of your keywords in the 1st paragraph rather than later in the page.
    • Headers: as long as they include keywords have as many as you want, they improve your SEO.
    • Meta tags: particularly the meta description
    • Images: files’ paths and alt text
